Net Send Command help and how to

Please note, there is no net send command in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. This command has been replaced by msg command.

If you need a console based messaging command for all windows versions - take a look to our LAN messenger LanTalk NET with command line utility. LanTalk NET can send messages from command line, messages from the prepared text files and even files. Additionally we can offer to you a free netsend app, that is compatible with net send command.

Microsoft Windows ( up to Windows XP ) offers a simple method to send messages to other users or computers on the network - simple WinPopup messages or Net Send Messages ( in Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 ).

Microsoft has not added a GUI program like Winpopup into Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows 2003, but you can use Net send command to send network messages from the command line interface and receive them with messenger service.

Define the name of a user (who is logged on to the network) or a computer name ( as defined in the properties of the Network ), followed by the message text. As with Winpopup, the system will only check, that the name is valid. If the receiving system is Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Me system and WinPopup is NOT running, this message will disappear.

When sending a message to all systems of a Workgroup or Domain, it will also be displayed on the system that sent the message:
